Our story
Caring better starts with choosing better
The story of a brand that began with one particular dog, and one particular way of doing things.
MAIKAI began because of Danco
A beautiful Golden Retriever with an enormous soul, who came into our lives to give us so much love and teach us so much.
Because of him we started to look differently at everything we chose for his wellbeing: the ingredients, the formulas, the amounts, what each product actually delivered, and everything that was there simply because it sounded good.
We didn't want to settle for reading a label. We wanted to understand what was behind it.
And the more we understood, the more questions we asked. The more we compared. The more we challenged. And the harder we found it to accept products formulated only because they were easy to sell, or because a word looked good on the packaging.
That's where MAIKAI began.
Good, useful and beautiful
MAIKAI, in Hawaiian. We didn't choose it because it already described what we were, but because it described the way we wanted to do things. We didn't want to make more products. We wanted to make them better
Every MAIKAI product starts with a real need. From there we look for the right laboratories and professionals to develop it: people who share our way of understanding animal health, with rigour, responsibility and no shortcuts.
Our job is to push, to ask and to understand. To know why each ingredient is there, what it does, in what amount it makes sense, and what evidence sits behind every decision.
We don't choose a formula because it sounds good or because it's easy to sell. We choose who to develop it with, what questions to ask, and how far to push before putting MAIKAI on the label.
Because for us, every ingredient has to have a reason. And every product, a reason to exist.
There is one question behind every MAIKAI product:
If the answer isn't a calm yes, it isn't ready yet. And we apply that same standard to what we say.
We don't promise miracles. We don't overstate benefits. We don't try to make a product look like more than it is. For us, honesty means explaining what it can do, what it can't, and what you can really expect from it.
Danco was the beginning. His legacy is our path
In August 2026 we had to say goodbye to Danco after almost ten years together. We can't put into words the enormous gap he has left.
But what he taught us is still very much here. He taught us to care with more attention, to question more, and not to settle for what simply sounds good.
And that lesson became a purpose: to put animal health and wellbeing ahead of marketing, trends and easy promises.
Because behind every product there is someone trying to look after an animal who is part of their family.
Danco was the beginning of MAIKAI. His legacy is the daily reminder of who we do all this for, and why it isn't worth doing it any other way.
Excellence isn't saying you've arrived
We'll keep learning, keep questioning and keep looking for better ways to do things. Because for us excellence isn't about saying you've arrived. It's about never stopping trying.
