Essential techniques and exercises

Educating a dog is one of the most important steps in ensuring a harmonious coexistence. Whether you have a puppy or an adult dog, dog training not only strengthens your bond with your furry friend, but also ensures their well-being. In this blog we will explain the most effective training techniques, practical exercises and useful tips to make your dog a balanced and happy companion.

1. When to start training a dog?

Education should start as early as possible, ideally from the first months of life. Puppies are like sponges: they absorb everything you teach them. However, if you have an adult dog, don’t worry! They can also learn with patience and perseverance.

2. Main dog training techniques

To train your dog effectively, it is essential to use techniques based on positive reinforcement and clear communication. Here are some key strategies:

  • Positive reinforcement: Reward your dog with natural treats, petting or words of encouragement every time he does something well. This reinforces desired behaviours and creates a positive association.
  • Repetition and consistency: Education requires constant practice. Use simple commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’ or ‘come’ consistently.
  • Avoid punishment: Instead of scolding, redirect his attention to correct behaviour and reward him.

3. Basic exercises for training your dog

Basic exercises are essential for teaching obedience and reinforcing communication. Here are the most important ones:

  • Seated:
    1. Hold a snack close to his nose.
    2. Move him up so that his head follows the prize and his bottom touches the ground.
    3. Say ‘sit!’ and give him the prize.
  • Quiet:
    1. Teach the command ‘sit down’ first.
    2. Show the palm of your hand and say ‘freeze’.
    3. Slowly take a few steps back and, if he doesn’t move, reward him.
  • Come when called:
    1. Use an animated tone of voice and say his or her name followed by ‘come!
    2. Reward him with a snack when he comes.

4. How long does it take to train a dog?

The time it takes to train a dog varies according to its age, breed and temperament. Some dogs learn basic commands in days, while others may need weeks. The key is patience and constant reinforcement. Tip: Spend short sessions (10-15 minutes) several times a day. Dogs tire quickly and will learn best in short, regular periods.

5. Solving common behavioural problems

  • Excessive barking: Identify the cause (boredom, fear, excitement) and redirect his energy to exercise or interactive toys.
  • Separation anxiety: Create a predictable routine and use toys or snacks to keep him entertained while you are away.
  • Lead tugs: Teach him to walk along with you by using treats and correcting with a ‘stop!’ when he pulls.
